Project 2, Week 3: French Knot Frustration

This week I was so excited to work exclusively on flowers. This required learning a knew stitch, however, which was a frustrating but rewarding process.

I learned to do the french knot stitch, but not without having to cut my thread and restart several times. The instructions that came with my embroidery kit were not substantial enough for me to understand how to do this stitch, so I turned to a reliable learning resource: YouTube tutorials.

Thank goodness for Mary Corbet! I don’t know who she is, but I owe her so much. The french knot basically consists of wrapping the thread around the needle and pulling it back through the canvas to make a close knot. I did quite a few practice knots, following her tutorial, as you can see here:

Of course, when I went to make a french knot stitch for real, it didn’t turn out quite as good as the ones I had practiced. That’s okay though, with each knot I felt more comfortable and proud of myself for figuring it out despite my hour of frustrated cutting and unraveling of thread as I learned this annoying but useful stitch.

I actually think this is my favorite stitch I’ve learned so far, it gives the appearance of cute little flowers and I think makes my work look a lot better and more elaborate than just plain old straight stitches and outline stitches. I am very happy so far with my progress despite its imperfections.
